Melvin Paul Barkmeier


A 35 year old Gothenburg man, Melvin P. Barkmeier, was killed in a one car mishap on December 27, 1970, just west of Willow Island, a village between Cozad and Gothenburg. The State Patrol said his car apparently went out of control on a curve.

Services will be held Wednesday at the Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. L.A. Portrey of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church officiating. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Adams & Swanson Chapel.

He was born January 25, 1935 at Exeter, Nebraska and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He came to North Platte in 1948 from Exeter, resided on the West Coast for six years, and returned to North Platte in August of 1967.

Mr. Barkmeier managed the Texaco station on Interstate 80 south of North Platte for two years. While in North Platte, he was a member of the North Platte Jaycees and served as vice president. He had been employed in Cozad since March.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Barkmeier, North Platte; one brother, Leonard, Cozad; three sisters, Mrs. Vonnelle Mulder, Denver; Mrs. Shirley Eggers, North Platte; and Mrs. Sally Mendez, North Platte.

Burial will be in the Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Funeral services for Melvin P. Barkmeier, 35, who died in an automobile accident over the Christmas Holiday, were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, 1970 at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. L.A. Portrey, St. Patrick's Catholic Church officiating.

Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Weaver, and Mrs. Samuel Grasmick.

Pallbearers were Richard Bell, Robert Hand, Ron Harvey, Glen Pickett, Tom Saling and Richard Tomasuvicz.

Burial was in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
