Frances Ruth (Hudgel) Barkmeier


Funeral Mass for Frances Barkmeier was offered July 12, 1973 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church by Rev. Richard Graham. Rosary services were recited at 7:30 p.m. July 11 at Lockwood Mortuary.

Frances Barkmeier died July 9 at the age of 74 years, nine months and seven days. She was born October 2, 1898 in Columbus, Ohio to Claude W. Hudgel and Rose Hudgel, Wray pioneers.

She attended grade and high school in Wray, Colorado. As a young women she worked for Western Union and served as librarian of the Wray Public Library. On May 16, 1929 she married Charles Barkmeier and they lived on a farm near Alexandria, Nebraska until after her mother's death in November 1929. They returned to Wray where her father lived with the Barkmeiers until his death in 1939.

Mrs. Barkmeier was active and held offices in Tuesday Study Club and St. Andrew's Altar and Rosary Society, and to the YY Club. In the early 1940's she again served as librarian until her health failed in 1943.

She and her husband have been parishioners of St. Andrew's Church Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Charles, her son Claude and wife Mary, three grandchildren, John, Steve and Catherine of Overland Park, Kansas.

Interment was at Grandview Cemetery.

Charles Frederick Barkmeier


Charles Frederick Barkmeier was born to George and Anna Wiszmann Barkmeier at Exeter, Nebraska, September 4, 1903. He died in Golden, Colorado, Tuesday, November 20, 1990 at the age of 97. Services included a rosary, Friday evening, November 23 and Mass, Saturday, November 24, 1990 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church with Fr. Bob Whipkey officiating. 

Charles was raised in Exeter and attended St. Stephen's School. As a young man he traveled across the country performing farm work to pay his way. He first came to Wray, Colorado in 1922 to work on William Menke's farm at Vernon. While working there, he met Frances Hudgel, whom he married in 1929. He and Frances bought a farm at Alexandria, Nebraska, where they lived for one year before returning to Wray. In Wray, he worked three years for Lee Davis Elevator Construction Company and three years for Stedwell Oil Company.

In 1936, he purchased the Garton Service Station which he operated as Barkmeier's Service Station until 1962. During this time, he was active in the Wray Commercial Club and served a term on the Wray City Council. After selling the station, he worked for Lynam's Service Station until he retired in 1969. In semi-retirement, he did lawn work and worked in Steve Bullard's Laundromat part-time for another ten years. He cared for his wife, Frances until her death in 1978.

Charles was active in St. Andrew's Catholic Church for over 60 years and was active in the 55 and Over Club. He enjoyed sports, playing cards and reading.

Proceeding him in death were his wife, Frances, his brother, Joseph, and his sister Catherine Campbell.

Charles is survived by a son, Claude and wife Mary, three grandchildren and their spouses, John and Claudia Barkmeier, Steve and Debora Barkmeier and Catherine and Tom Satowski; six great grandchildren, Linda, Allie, Mark, Scott, and Kirsten Barkmeier, and Joseph Satowski.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wray Community District Hospital.
