SPIRES - EKELER


Miss Sheila Gae Spires, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spires of Exeter, and Thomas William Ekeler, son of Mrs. Vione Ekeler of Lincoln, formerly from Exeter, were married in holy matrimony at a 7 p.m. double ring ceremony Friday, October 24, 1975, at St. Stephens's Catholic Church with Msgr. Ingenhorst officiating.

The church was decorated with baskets of dried brown oak foliage, wheat, rust strawflowers and natural cordone accented with miniature cattails and avena.

The white carpeted bridal aisle was adorned with hurricane lamps tied in apricot and rust satin bows. Two nine-branch circular candelabra placed on each side of the altar completed the fall wedding background.

Mrs. Henrietta Harre of Exeter was the organist. The vocalist, Mrs. Cherlyn Horne, sang "One Hand, One Heart", "All That I Am", "The Lord's Prayer" and "Mother At Your Feet Is Kneeling".

The bride, escorted to the altar by her father and mother, chose a gown designed of white organza on a A-line silhouette. The bodice featured a V-shaped bib of Chantilly lace, trimmed with accordion pleating. The sleeves billowed from a wide cuff of bishop fullness. The skirt was floor-length and trimmed in lace and pleating.

To complete the total, the wore a chapel-length veil, trimmed in matching lace. She carried a cascade bouquet of stephanotis, sonja roses and ivy.

The bride's attendants included her sister, Mrs. Kathy Volkmer, as maid of honor, and Miss Mary Jane Underwood, friend of the bride, as bridesmaid.

They wore matching gowns, one of rust, the other apricot, fashioned with long billowing sleeves that buttoned at the cuff. The gown was designed with a empire waistline that gathered at the front and tied with a bow at the back. The neck featured a mandarin collar with the bodice buttoning to the waist.

Both attendants carried fireside baskets of dried natural cardone, rust strawflowers, baby breath and accents of dried foliage.

Mary McKay, niece of the groom, was the flower girl. She carried a basket of dried rust strawflowers and baby breath.

Jim Ekeler of Lincoln, the groom's brother served as best man. Groomsman was Noel Harre of Omaha. James Kopsa of York, nephew of the bride, served as ringbearer.

Dan Ekeler of Exeter served as lector and usher. Other ushers were Dennis Volkmer of Exeter, Larry Ekeler, brother of the groom, and Spencer Spires of Lincoln, brother of the bride

Frank Ekeler of Lincoln, nephew of the groom, and Paul Ekeler of Exeter, cousin of the groom, served as altar boys.

The groom, bride's father, groomsmen, ushers and ringbearer wore dark tuxedos with apricot ruffled shirts and sonja rose boutonnieres. The groom's boutonniere was stephanotis.

The mother of the bride chose a floor-length gown of rust and apricot. The groom's mother wore a floor-length gown of light blue polyester knit. Each wore a sonja rose corsage.

Honored guests were the grandparents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. McKinley Land of Central City, and the grandparents of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schafer of Exeter.

The grandmothers' corsages were of white carnations and sonja roses. The grandfathers wore white white carnation boutonnieres.

A reception and dance followed at the American Legion Hall with Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kopsa of York, serving as host and hostess.

Registering gofts were Miss Teri Spires of Omaha, Miss Betty Hansher of Clarks and Miss Eileen Ekeler and Mass Margaret Mueller of Exeter.

The club was decorated with a gold covered reception table centered with a five-tiered wedding cake decorated with sonja roses and rust colored dried nigella pods accented with dried brown foliage and withe baby breath.

The cake was cut and served by Mrs. Beverly Schuele of Columbus, aunt of the bride, and Mrs. Ruth Ekeler of Exeter, aunt of the groom.

Serving punch and coffee were Miss Joyce Ekeler and Miss Linda Ekeler, sisters of the groom.

Margie Manning, Sandy Klemm and Brenda Manning of Lincoln, and Mrs. Clara Harre of Omaha, friends of the bride, served the bridal table.

After a wedding trip to Colorado, the couple will reside in Exeter.
