Obituary William A. Ekeler was born to Frank and Anna (Barkmeier) Ekeler north of Exeter on October 22, 1912, and passed away May 24, 1994, at the Fillmore County Hospital, Geneva, Nebraska, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 2 days. He was one of 10 children in the family. Bill graduated from Exeter High School with the class of 1931. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II for four years. After the war, Bill returned home and farmed north of Exeter until he retired. William was married to Frances Geiger of Fairmont, Nebraska, on February 20, 1946, and to this union four children were born, Mary Jane, Ronald William, Kenneth John and Doris Ann. Bill was a member of St. Stephens's Catholic church and also the Exeter American Legion Post 218. Bill was preceded in death by his son Ronald, parents, Frank and Anna, and seven brothers. He is survived by his wife Frances, son Kenneth and wife Nancy of York, Nebraska, two daughters, Mary Jane and husband Jerry Kelch of Exeter, Nebraska, Doris and husband Curt Larka of York, Nebraska, six grandchildren, Michael and wife Holly Kelch of Exeter, Nebraska, Sharon Kelch of Seward, Nebraska, Chad and Todd Kelch of York, Kim and Jeff Larka of York, Nebraska, two brothers, Dr. L.J. Ekeler of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Leo Ekeler of Exeter, Nebraska, and other relatives and friends. Funeral
services were conducted from St. Stephens's Catholic Church, Exeter,
Nebraska on Friday, May 27 with Father John Glaves officiating.
St. Stephen's Catholic Church Choir provided the music for Mass. Casket
bearers were Tom Ekeler, Jerome Ekeler, Paul Ekeler, Dan Ekeler, Jerome
Geiger and Gerald Geiger. Internment was in the Exeter Cemetery with
Farmer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorial are directed to
the Exeter Rescue Unit or St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Obituary Frances Elizabeth (Geiger) Ekeler was born to Peter (Pete) Geiger and Dora Noel Geiger on April 7, 1918, at Fairmont. She passed away on November 26, 2001, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 19 days. She was one of six children in the family. She was raised near Fairmont and attended school in Exeter graduating with the class of 1936. She married William A. Ekeler on February 20, 1946. To this marriage were born, Mary Jane, Ronald, Kenneth and Doris. Frances was a very dedicated wife and mother, and was at the height of her glory when she could be spending time with her family. Holding down the family home north of Exeter, while her man worked the land, she enjoyed the quality that only "good ol' country living" could provide. William retired from farming in 1977 and at that time they moved to Exeter, where they appreciated the benefits of town living. She spent her sunset years enjoying her many friends and family, especially so, when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren would come for a visit. She was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and the church altar society throughout her life. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Dora Geiger; by her husband, William A. Ekeler; son, Ronald Ekeler; brothers John and Raymond Geiger; and sisters, Helen Barkmeier and Genevieve Geiger. Surviving are daughters, Mary Jane Kelch and husband Jerry of Exeter, Doris Larka and husband Curt of York, son Kenneth Ekeler and wife Nancy of York; grandchildren Michael Kelch and wife Holly of Exeter, Sharon Rhoades and husband Dan of Seward, Chad Ekeler and wife Nichole of York, Todd Ekeler of York, Kimberly Larka of York, Jeffery Larka of York; great-grandchildren Jerry Kelch, son of Michael and Holly, Dalton Ekeler, son of Chad and Nichole, Rebecca Rhodes, daughter of Sharon and Dan Rhodes; brother Arnold Geiger and wife Marion of Exeter; many other family and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Friday November 30. from St. Stephen's Catholic Church with Father Kenneth Borowiak officiating. Lector was Douglas Anderson and acolyte was Gerald Geiger. Organist was Agnes Anderson with Greg Rehm serving as cantor. Casket bearers were: Jerome Geiger, Jay Geiger, Richard Barkmeier, Gerald Geiger, Wilfrid Ekeler and Tom Ekeler. Honorary bearers were Greg Ekeler and Jim Geiger. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery with Farmer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials are directed to the Church or Exeter Rescue Squad.
