Raymond John Barkmeier

Raymond John Barkmeier, 78, died Thursday, August 22, 1996 in Naples, Florida.

He was a widely known grocer in Hampton, Iowa and former President of the Associated Grocers of Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 am Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hampton, with Father Jerry Condon and Father Walter J. Kleinfehn officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation began at 2:00 pm Sunday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, with a 7:00 pm Scripture service.

Mr. Barkmeier and his longtime friend and business partner, F.D. Wullbrandt, operated B & W Grocery stores in the Hampton area 40 years and also owned the First State Bank of Greene. Mr. Barkmeier served 23 years as President of Associated Grocers of Iowa (A.G.I.).

Born March 23, 1918, in Exeter, Nebraska, he was the son of August and Anna (Menke) Barkmeier.

His roots in the food business began with the family store in Exeter. He worked for Sunshine Biscuit Company for a number of years until he and Wullbrandt established their first B & W Grocery store in Hampton in 1947. The chain expanded with stores in six area towns: Sheffield, Dumont, Greene, Allison, Clarion and Nashua until their sale to the Fairco Corporation in 1985.

Mr. Barkmeier was elected President of A.G.I. in 1961. Under his leadership, the organization expanded to 300 retail members. In 1976, A.G.I. built the state's largest wholesale food-distributor warehouse. The building on the south edge of Ankeny was described at the time by one trade magazine as "state-of-the art" in food distribution.

One of Hampton's most respected civic and business leaders, Mr. Barkmeier was committed to community service. As chairman of the building committee for the Hampton Community School District, he led a successful campaign to approve a bond issue for a new high school building. He later chaired the fund drive to build a new St. Patrick's Catholic Church building down the street.

Mr. Barkmeier was past president of the Hampton Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Quarterback Club. He was an avid sports fan and an ardent supporter of the University of Iowa. A member of the U of I President's Club, he lived in Iowa City for about two years following his retirement from the food business in 1985.

He is survived by wife, Alice, who he married on February 9, 1948; and six children, John, of Appleton; Wisconsin; Jim and Joe, of Champaign, Illinois; Jerry, of Springfield, Illinois; Julie, of Bethesda, Maryland; Jeff, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Sara and Lauren of Appleton, Wisconsin; Matthew and James of Champaign, Illinois; Daniel and Kyle, also of Champaign, Illinois; and Jared and Lia, of Springfield, Illinois; and two sisters, Helena Barkmeier of Exeter, Nebraska and Rose Alldritt Lilly of Los Angeles, California.
