Henry Matthew Ekeler


Henry M. Ekeler was born to Frank and Anna M. (Barkmeier) Ekeler on October 11, 1904, at Exeter, Nebraska, and passed away Thursday, September 17, 1987, at the Friend Manor in Friend, Nebraska, at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 6 days.

Henry attended St. Stephen's Catholic School. He has always lived in the Exeter area and was engaged in farming until his retirement in 1977. At this time, Marie and Henry moved into their present home in Exeter. In the spring of 1983, Henry became ill and in June moved to the Friend Manor, where he resided until his death.

Henry was married to Marie Ruhl of Exeter, Nebraska on June 21, 1932. They adopted two daughters, Agnes Marie and Kathleen Ann.

His joy and delight was to be with little children. He respected and loved the land which he farmed.

Henry was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church. He served on the Church Board for 34 years and sang in the choir for 40 years. He was on the Diocesan Lay Vocation Board. For 18 years, he served as Exeter Township Clerk.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Monsignor John F., Frank, Joe, August, Fred, Alfred; and one granddaughter, Darcee Ann Due.

He is survived by his wife, Marie of Exeter; two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Anderson and husband, Jim, and Kathy Due and husband, Dean, all of Exeter; four grandsons, Doug and Dennis Anderson, and Jim and Bob Due; three brothers, Dr. L.J. Ekeler of Lincoln, William and Leo Ekeler of Exeter; nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.

Rosary was recited by Father Anthony Trausch on Friday, September 18, 1987 at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmer Funeral Home.

The funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Leo Shedivy and Father Anthony Trausch on Saturday, September 19, 1987 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter, Nebraska. Brother Albert of the Crosier Monastery, Hastings, Nebraska, assisted with the service. St. Stephens's Choir sang the funeral Mass.

Pallbearers were nephews Dan Ekeler, Jerome Ekeler, Paul Ekeler, James J. Ekeler, Ken Ekeler, Wilfrid Ekeler and John L. Ekeler.

Marie Delivance (Ruhl) Ekeler


Marie D. Ruhl was born to Aloysius P. Ruhl and Teresa M. (Robbins) Ruhl on September 14, 1912 at Exeter, Nebraska. She was the fourth in the family of eleven children. Marie died January 19, 2003 at the Exeter Care Center

She was baptized at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Exeter and was a life long member. Her education included Fillmore County District #78, St. Stephen Catholic School, and the Immaculate Conception Academy, Hastings, Nebraska through the ninth grade.

On June 21, 1932, Marie was married to Henry M. Ekeler at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Exeter, Nebraska. They raised two daughter, Agnes Marie and Kathleen Ann. Marie and Henry lived and farmed north of Exeter. Marie worked at the Exeter City Cafe owned by her sister, Teresa. They retired to Exeter in July 1977.

Marie loved her family and enjoyed visiting with young and old alike. She was a member of the Happy Hour Extension Club, Exeter Woman's Club, St. Stephen's Alter Society, Crete Deanery and LDCCW Boards, and was an avid card player. She was correspondent for the Catholic Southern Nebraska Register for many years.

Marie is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Agnes Anderson, Kathleen and Dean Due, grandsons Douglas and Dennis Anderson, James and Robert Due, and sister Teresa Johnson Erdkamp, four sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Henry, granddaughter, Darcee and son-in-law James Anderson, parents, Aloysius and Teresa Ruhl, three sisters, Stella, Agatha, Angela, five brothers, Tim, Thaddeus, Bill, Kenneth and Ollie.

Rosary was recited at the Farmer Funeral Home, Exeter, on January 13, 2003. Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Geneva Nebraska at 10:30 a.m. on January 14, 2003. Father Kenneth Borowiak and Father Peter Gadient were co-celebrants with Rusty Ruhl, acolyte, Ryan Ruhl, lector, Peter and Mark Ruhl, servers, Karen Base, Pat Becker and Mary Vestecka, gift bearers. St. Stephen and St Joseph Choirs, accompanied by Michael Zeleny, provided the music. Casket bearers were Ron Ruhl, Harvey Johnson, Darryl Ruhl, Gene Ruhl, Sonny Hanson, Rocky Ruhl and Carryl Ruhl. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, Nebraska.

Farmer Funeral Home, Exeter, Nebraska was in charge of arrangements.

 

Card of Thanks

Thanks to everyone for the cards, visits, telephone calls, food, flowers, masses and memorials at the time of our mom and grandma, Marie Ekeler's death. Our gratitude and appreciation to Father Kenneth Borowiak for his prayers, visits, and concern for our mother and grandmother both before and at the time of her death. Also, a special thank you to the staff at Exeter Care Center for their loving care and friendship and to Dr. Pat Hotovy and Trevor Hansen. We thank St. Stephen Altar Society for serving the delicious luncheon for our family and friends and to Msgr. Ivan Gap and St. Joseph Parish, Geneva, for the use of the church. Thanks to Michael Zeleny and the choirs of St. Stephen and St. Joseph for providing the music and all who participated in the funeral Mass. Thanks to Farmer Funeral Home for helping with the arrangements.
