Frank Leo Barkmeier


Frank Leo Barkmeier was born to John Barkmeier and Mary (Klemm) Barkmeier on March 24, 1910 at Exeter and passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva September 25, 1986 at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 1 day. He was one of three children in the family. He was a lifelong member of the Exeter community and attended school in Exeter

He was united in marriage to Helen Geiger at the Catholic church in Exeter on January 24, 1942. To them two children were born.

He was engaged in farming until he was called to active service in World War II. He entered the army on April 3, 1942.

He served overseas in the Asiatic Pacific theatre in New Guinea in the Papua Campaign and received three battle stars. He received his honorable discharge on May 5, 1945, then he returned to the Exeter community to resume farming. In 1965 the family moved to town in Exeter. Then, he was employed by Kassiks Milling Company in Milligan until he retired.

Frank was a lifetime member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and a member of the Exeter American Legion Post No. 218.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife Helen of Exeter, a son, Richard and wife Kathy of Lincoln, a daughter, Betty, and her husband Terry Russell of Lincoln, four grandchildren, Brenda, Lori and Shari Barkmeier, Mike Russell, all of Lincoln, and by nieces, nephews and friends.

He always looked forward to being with his children. He was a baseball fan. He liked to play ball and watch all the league games.

Rosary was recited from the Farmer Funeral Home, Sunday evening September 28th.

Funeral services were conducted from St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter at 10 o'clock a.m., Monday September 29th, with Rt. Rev. Msgr. H. H. Ingenhorst officiating.

St. Stephens's choir sang, accompanied by Henrietta Harre. Serving as pallbearers were: Kenneth Ekeler, Gerry Geiger, Jerome Geiger, James Geiger, Jay Geiger and Thomas Klemm. Internment was in the Exeter Cemetery, with graveside military services conducted by the American Legion Post No. 218.

Farmer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Christina (Geiger) Barkmeier


Helen C. Barkmeier, 89, of Exeter, Nebraska died Friday, November 9, 2001 in Exeter.

She was born July 21, 1912, the daughter of Peter and Dora (Noel) Geiger, at Exeter, Nebraska.

Survivors include her son, Richard (Kathy) Barkmeier of Lincoln; daughter Betty Jean Russell of Bennet; brother Arnie (Marion) Geiger of Exeter; sister Frances Ekeler of Exeter; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A Rosary service was held at the Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Exeter at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 12. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 13, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. Graveside services were at the Exeter Cemetery, with Father Kenneth Borowiak officiating.
