BRIGADIER GENERAL (DR.) WAYNE W. BARKMEIER

Brigadier General (Dr.) Wayne W. Barkmeier was mobilization assistant to the assistant surgeon general for dental services, Office of the Surgeon General, Bolling Air Force Base, D.C. from August 1988 to July 1994.

General Barkmeier was born March 29, 1944, in Friend, Neb.  He graduated from Exeter (Neb.) High School in 1962 and attended the University of Nebraska for three years.  He earned a doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1969 and a master of science degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 1975.  He completed Squadron Officer School in 1977 and Air War College in 1987.

The general entered active duty in 1969 with a direct commission and completed a one-year rotating internship at the USAF Medical Center, Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.  He then was a general dental officer at Karamursel Common Defense Installation, Turkey, from 1970 through 1972.  General Barkmeier returned to the United States and was assigned as a general dental officer at the USAF Hospital, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.  He completed a two-year postgraduate program in general dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in 1975.  He then was assigned to the USAF Hospital, Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., as chief of operative dentistry and instructor in the general practice residency program.

The general separated from active duty in 1978 and joined the Air Force Reserve.  He was assigned to the 9019th Air Reserve Squadron, Air Reserve Personnel Center, Denver, with attachment as mobilization augmentee to Ehrling Berquist USAF Regional Hospital, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., until 1980.  He was next mobilization augmentee to the command dental surgeon, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, until 1982.  He was assigned to USAF Hospital, Dover Air Force Base Del., from 1982 until 1984.  He then was mobilization augmentee to the command dental surgeon, Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va., until 1985.  From 1985 until 1986 he was advisor on dental services to the deputy chief of staff for health services at Headquarters Air Force Reserve, Robins Air Force Base, Ga.  In 1986 he became advisor on dental services to the command surgeon, SAC Headquarters.  He was then assigned as mobilization assistant to the assistant surgeon general for dental services, Office of the Surgeon General, Bolling Air Force Base, D.C. in 1988.

His military awards and decorations include Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon-Long, Air Force Longevity Service Award with four oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Air Force Training Ribbon.

In his civilian capacity, General Barkmeier is dean and professor of operative dentistry at Creighton University School of Dentistry, Omaha, Neb.  He has presented numerous continuing education courses throughout the world on dental materials and restorative procedures, and has authored more than 120 articles in professional journals.  He served as consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation and as a member of the American Dental Association Council on Dental Research.  Also, he served as dental materials consultant to the National Board Operative Dentistry Test Construction Committee, Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations.  He has served as an article review consultant for the Journal of the American Dental Association, American Journal of Dentistry, Journal of Dental Materials, and Quintessence International.  He also has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Operative Dentistry, Military Medicine, Journal of Esthetic Dentistry and the Journal of Continuing Education for the Health Sciences.

His civic and military affiliations have included the American Dental Association, Academy of Operative Dentistry, American Association for Dental Research, International Association for Dental Research, Association of Military Surgeons of the United States and the Reserve Officers Association.  He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists.

He was promoted to brigadier general July 17, 1991, with same date of rank.

General Barkmeier is married to the former Carolyn Ann Johnsen of Beaver Crossing, Neb.  They have three children: Kimberly, Jennifer and Wayne Jr.
