This community was grieved to hear that Mrs. Henry Barkmeier had passed away Friday, July 17, 1931, at the age of 53 years, 2 months and 15 days. She had been ill for seven months, yet the end came unexpectedly. Mary was born at Riemsloh, Germany on October 9, 1877. She came to America in August 1881 and made her home with her grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harre, until her marriage to Henry Barkmeier on April 26, 1898, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church by Rev. Father Hansen. She was a kind and loving wife and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, Henry Barkmeier, three half-sisters, Anna Barkmeier of Exeter, Agnes Prochaska of Crete and Elizabeth Martin of Denver, Colorado; one half-brother, John Winkler of Crete, and a host of relatives and friends. Her mother, two brothers and one sister have preceded her in death. A little over a year ago she and her husband moved to their lovely home in north Exeter. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church at 9 o’clock Monday morning, by Rev. John Ekeler of Colon. Nebraska, assisted by Rev. E. Boll. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery. Relatives from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Prochaska and family and John Winkler of Crete; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barkmeier of Wray, Colorado; Joe Richa of Hebron; Rev. John Ekeler of Colon; and Mrs. Bougger, Augustine Bougger and Catherine Bougger of David City.

Henry Barkmeier
Obituary Henry Barkmeier was born in Westendorf, Germany, February 28, 1870. He passed away January 26, 1945, at the age of 74 year, 10 months and 29 days. When 19 years of age he came to the United States with his parents and settled in Nebraska on a farm near Exeter. He was married to Mary Harre on April 26, 1898. They established their home on a farm northwest of Exeter and resided there for 30 years. In 1910 he and his brother, Frank, went for a visit back to Germany. He continued to make his home on his farm until 1931, when he and Mrs. Barkmeier moved to town. Here his wife preceded him in death on July 17, 1931. His mother and sister then made there home with him until his mother passed away in 1935. He then went to live with his brother and sister-in-law until the time of his death. Mr. Barkmeier had been in poor health for a number of years. He bore his suffering with much patience and resignation. He leaves to mourn two sisters, Mrs. Frank Ekeler, Sr. and Sister Mary Raphael, four brothers, August, John, William and Fred, all of Exeter, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Monday, January 29, at 9:30 at St. Stephens Catholic Chruch with Father A. Antochowski singing the requiem High Mass, and Father John Ekeler, nephew of Mr. Barkmeier, delivering the sermon. Five nephews, Henry, and Frank Eleker, Jr., and Louis, Walter, and Phillip Barkmeier, and one cousin, John Winkler, were pallbearers. Burial was in the Exeter Cemetery. Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Prohaska and Frank, Mrs. George Winkler, John Winkler and Rev. John Ekeler all of Crete and Sister Mary Raphael Geyger of Spaulding, Nebraska.
