Mr. and Mrs. John Barkmeier celebrated their fiftieth wedding
anniversary on Monday, May 16, 1955.
The celebration was opened by attending Mass, which was said by Msgr. Healy in their honor, at St. Stephen's
Catholic Church in
Exeter at ten o'clock, the same place they were married 50 years ago. Their attendants, William Barkmeier and Miss Kathryn
Klemm, were also present. Msgr. Ekeler, Crete, was present in the sanctuary. Servers at the Mass were Richard Barkmeier,
Larry Ekeler, Wayne Barkmeier and Jimmy Geiger.
Mrs. Barkmeier wore a dark blue crepe dress with a yellow carnation corsage and Mr. Barkmeier wore a dark blue suit with a
carnation boutonniere. The corsages were gifts from grandchildren, Richard and Betty Jean Barkmeier.
After Mass, a dinner was served in the church basement to the family and brothers and sisters of the honored couple.
In the afternoon an open house was held from two to four o'clock. A host of relatives and friends signed the guest book and
extended their wishes.
The reception table was centered with a large four-tier wedding cake decorated with yellow roses and topped with two white
bells. On either side of the cake were white candles tied with gold ribbons. Beautiful spring flowers also decorated the
tables. The wedding cake was baked by and decorated by Mrs. Frank Barkmeier and Mrs. Henry Ekeler.
The guests were served refreshments carrying out the gold theme with Mrs. Edmund Klemm pouring and Mrs. John Morgan
cutting and serving the wedding cake. Others helping with the dinner and serving were Mrs. Edward Mueller, Mrs. Leo Ekeler,
Mrs. William Ekeler and Mrs. Henry Ekeler. Agnes Ann Ekeler had charge of the gifts.
Mr. and Mrs. Barkmeier received many lovely gifts, flowers and a large number of anniversary cards.
They have lived on the same farm north of Exeter ever since their marriage 50 years ago. They have three children, seven
grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
