William Frederick and Anna Marie (Winkler) Barkmeier
William "Bill" Frederick and Anna Marie (Winkler) Barkmeier owned a farm southeast of Exeter, Nebraska. The 80 acre farm was located one and a quarter miles east of the intersection on the road that continues straight east of Exeter on Highway 6 before the S-shaped curve, then one mile south. A 1918 atlas of Fillmore County shows that this farm was rented by Bill's brother, Frederick "Fred" August Barkmeier, and wife, Clara Elizabeth (Wiszmann) Barkmeier.

Following the death of Bill's father, Frederick Barkmeier, in 1916, Bill and Anna Marie farmed the 160 acre farm in the Fairmont Township owned by Bill's parents. After his father's death, Bill's mother, Mary, and his adopted sister, Victoria Geyger, lived with Bill and his wife, Anna Marie, for awhile. His brother, Henry "Hank" Mathias Barkmeier, and his wife, Mary (Harre) Barkmeier, lived on a farm located immediately to the east. Hank and Mary rented this 160 acre farm from Peter Michaely. Bill and Hank's sister, Anna Marie (Barkmeier) Ekeler and her husband, Frank Ekeler, lived on a 160 acre farm immediately north (across the road) of the farm rented by Hank and Mary.
