Anna Marie (Winkler) Barkmeier


Anna M. Barkmeier, daughter of August and Gertrude Winkler, was born November 23,1882 at Crete, Nebraska and passed away April 29, 1963 at, Warren Memorial Hospital at Friend, at the age of 80 years, 5 months, and 6 days. She had been in poor health for several years, but due to her illness, she always enjoyed her family and two wonderful grandchildren. She was a faithful member of her church. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

February 6, 1918, she was united in marriage to William Barkmeier. To this union were born three children. Mrs. Barkmeier was preceded in death by a son Leo, a daughter Margaret, father and mother, two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her husband William, daughter, Anna Marie (Mrs. Ed Mueller); son-in-law Edward, two grandchildren, Robert and Margaret Mueller, one sister Mrs. L. G. Martin of Denver, Colorado, one brother, John Winkler of Crete, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, May 1, 1963 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with Msgr. H. H. Ingenhorst officiating and Msgr. Ekeler in the sanctuary. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Ekeler, Alfred Ekeler, Frank Barkmeier, Louis Barkmeier, Maurice Clark and Don Wendelin.

Obituary
William Frederick Barkmeier


William Barkmeier was born in Westendorf, Germany to Fred and Mary (Tepe) Barkmeier on March 27, 1884 and passed away at Geneva, Nebraska, March 5, 1980 at the age of 95 years, 11 months and 5 days.

William was one of 8 children. He came to the United States at the age of 5 and lived east of Exeter on a farm with his parents, brothers and sisters and went to District No. 22 school.

In 1901 Sister Raphael (Victoria Geyger) came from New York and was adopted by the Barkmeiers. In 1902 they moved to a farm northwest of town. In 1918 he married Anna Winkler of Crete and remained living there and farmed until 1943 when they moved west of town where he continued farming until 1960 when he retired. His wife died in 1963 and he moved to town in 1976 where he lived with his daughter Anna Marie and grandchildren which he loved so much. In 1978 he entered the Bethesda Care Center where he remained until his passing.

William was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Anna; son Leo; daughter, Margaret; brothers, Frank, Henry, George, August, John, and Fred; sister, Anna Ekeler; son-in-law, Edward; and grandson, James Mueller.

He is survived by his daughter Anna Marie; one sister, Sister M. Raphael of Mc Cook; three grandchildren, Margaret, John and Bob; two great grandchildren, Amy and T.J.; nieces, nephews and relatives.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church.

After Mr. Barkmeier was married, his mother and sister Victoria made their home with them for a number of years. He was a devoted son and brother to them.

Services were held Saturday, March 8 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with burial in the Exeter Cemetery.

Six nephews were pallbearers, Bill Morgan, Maurice Clark, William, Leo and Alfred Ekeler and Frank Barkmeier.
