August Frank Barkmeier


August F. Barkmeier, son of Frederick and Mary Barkmeier was born March 1, 1876, near Riemsloh, Germany.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith.

He received his early education in Germany and at the age of thirteen immigrated with his parents and family to the United States, coming directly to Exeter, Nebraska.

He spent the remainder of his life in the Exeter community, where he continued his education. He was actively engaged in farming until his health failed in 1936 and the family moved to Exeter. Mr. Barkmeier was an invalid for twenty-four years. Although he suffered a great deal, he was always happy and cheerful. He maintained an interest in his religion, politics and all phases of sports to the very end. His neighbors and friends remember him as the kindliest of men and as a loyal and understanding friend.

He was united in marriage to Anna Menke, April 15, 1902. In April 1952, they were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. To this union four daughters and four sons were born.

Thursday evening, September 2, 1960, death came to him at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend, Nebraska, where he had been taken earlier in the week when his illness became critical.

He is survived by his wife Anna, four sons, Louis and Walter of Exeter, Vincent of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Raymond of Hampton, Iowa and four daughters, Ella Morgan of Exeter, Rose Alldritt of Hollywood, California, Lea and Lillian of Exeter, sixteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two sisters, Anna Ekeler of Exeter, Sister Raphael of McCook and three brothers, John, William and Fred of Exeter.

Holy Rosary was recited Sunday evening. Funeral services were held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Exeter at 9:30 A.M. Monday, September 26, with Msgr. John Ekeler, nephew of the deceased, officiating. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery.

Barkmeier were: Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Barkmeier and family of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond, Barkmeier and family, Hampton, Iowa; Sister Raphael, McCook, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Charles  Barkmeier, Mr. and Mrs. William Menke, Mrs. Joseph Conrad of Wray, Colorado; Louis Menke of Greeley, Colorado; Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell, Omaha, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Clark, Mr. and Mrs. William Mathews, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mathews, McCool Junction, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Doran, Lincoln, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Don Nickel, Kearney, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Carlson, Superior, Nebraska; and Mrs. Kenny Jensby, Hardy Nebraska.

Anna Barbara (Menke) Barkmeier


Anna, daughter of Louis and Anna Menke, was born March 27, 1881 at Exeter, Nebraska.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith.

She was united in marriage to August Barkmeier on April 15, 1902. They were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. To this union for daughters and four sons were born.

She spent her entire life in the Exeter community. Her greatest interest in life were her religion and her family. She enjoyed and was ever faithful to both of them. Her neighbors and friends remembered her as the kindest of women and as a loyal and understanding friend.

Thursday afternoon, March 8, 1962, death came to her at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend, Nebraska, where she had been critically ill for the past seven weeks.

She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1960.

She is survived by her four sons, Louis, and Walter of Exeter, Vincent of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Raymond of Hampton, Iowa, and four daughters Ella Morgan of Exeter, Rose Alldritt of Hollywood, California, Lea and Lillian of Exeter, sixteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. William Mathews and Mrs. Richard Mathews, McCool Junction, Nebraska and Mrs. Minnie Hammond, Martin, South Dakota and one brother William Menke, Wray Colorado.

Funeral services were held at St. Stephen's Catholic Church at 10 A.M., Monday March 12th with Msgr. Ingenhorst officiating. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery.

Mathews and Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Clark of McCool Junction, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mathews of York, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Carlson of Superior, Nebraska; Mrs. Kenneth Jenspy, Hardy, Nebraska; Miss Alice Dumpert, Minden Nebraska; Mrs. Lewis Dey, Seward, Nebraska; Mrs Charles Mooberry, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Geis and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Brooks of Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Don Nickel and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kerns of Kearney, Nebraska.
