Barbara Dumpert was born in Eggenback, Bavaria, Germany in 1861. She moved with her parents to Exeter, Nebraska about 1879. She met her future husband Nichlaus Becker in Exeter and they were married in 1882. Barbara and Nichlaus had five children while living in Nebraska. They were Joseph 1883, William 1885, Felix 1888, Anna 1890 and Mary 1894.

Because of health related issues of husband Nichlaus, they looked for a milder climate and found Muenster, Texas, moving there in 1894. Nichlaus passed away in 1897, only a little over two years after moving to Texas. Barbara and her five children, the oldest being 13 years, stayed on the farm. With the help of her children, they managed to pay off the farm and purchased a larger one. The three sons continued to farm as a partnership.

Nick Becker and family loaded their household effects and farm implements into a F.E. & M.V. (Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley) railroad car, Thursday, and departed for Muenster, Texas, where they expect to make their future home.

                           in Lincoln, Nebraska on February 23, 1873. Louis and Anna Marie lived in York County,
                           when first married, then on a farm about three miles east of Exeter. They were the parents
                           of 11 children. Nine children survived infancy and all were married in St. Stephen's Catholic
                           Church in Exeter.)

Anna Marie Becker Menke Louis Menke

Louis Menke had an appendicitis in January of 1899. The physician-surgeon had to travel from Lincoln, Nebraska to Exeter by train. He was needed in Exeter for two sick individuals. Because of a big snow storm, the trip had to be delayed for a day. Following his arrival in Exeter, the physician traveled to the family farm by horse and buggy. The farmstead was located about three miles east of Exeter.  The surgeon operated on Louis on the kitchen table. The appendix had ruptured and gangrene was present.

Louis died January 24, 1889 (age 55), and was survived by his wife, Anna Marie Becker Menke, and nine children; Fredericka 1874, Mary 1877, John 1879, Anna 1881, Philmina 1883, Sophia 1885, Helena 1889, Henry 1891 and William 1894.

Dr. Woodard of Lincoln was in town Monday in consultation with Dr. McCleery, over the case of Louis Menke, a well know farmer east of town.

Louis Menke, a wealthy German farmer, two miles east of Exeter, died Tuesday. His funeral was held the next day. He was the owner of 840 acres of land and left a family of nine children.

DIED - at his home on January 24, 1899, at 3 p.m., Ludwig Menke, from the effect of an operation twenty-four hours prior to his death. Aged fifty-five years, six months and seventeen days.

Ludwig Menke was born July 7, 1843 in the western province of Hanover, Germany. He leaves behind a wife and nine children to mourn the loss of a husband and father, besides a large number of dear friends. Mr. Menke was a well-to-do farmer, and was held in  high esteem by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held at the home and the remains were interred in the Exeter Cemetery with Rev. G. Haah officiating.

The Exeter Electric Light and Power Company located in the Tag Factory was sold in September 1916 to the Public Service Corporation headquartered in York, Nebraska. Exeter had the reputation of being the most highly developed town electrically in this part of the country.

St. Stephen Catholic Church

St. Stephen's Catholic Church is Exeter, Nebraska was dedicated on May 27, 1903. Total costs of the new church were upward of $22,000.

On August 8, 1917, a severe wind and hail storm caused significant damage to the church. The large steeple, which was approximately 125 feet above street level, was blown to the ground, as well as the smaller steeple to the south. The church was repaired after the storm but the large steeple was not rebuilt.

Over the years, many descendants of Peter and Anna Maria Klein Becker were baptized and married in St. Stephen's Catholic Church.
