The passenger list wrongly indexed him as Fr Barkmeyer. In the original listing the name was Jo Barkmeyer. In his wife's death record of 1853, she is referred to as "the widow of hireling Joseph Barkemeyer from Westendorf, who immigrated to America in the year of 1838 and died in New Orleans on August 2, 1839". |

Immigration to the United States of AmericaOn December 29, 1888, Johann Friedrich Barkmeyer requested the Prussian authorities for the release from allegiance to Prussia for the purpose of immigration of himself, his wife, and all of their children, except Franz Ferdinand who had already immigrated to the United States of America a year before (1887). On January 29, 1889 Johann Friedrich received a certificate of release form allegiance to Prussia.
Johann Friedrich and his family traveled from Bremen, Germany on the S/S Lahn, leaving on February 27, 1889, and arriving at Ellis Island, New York on March 8, 1889. The immigration records show the following:Friedr. Barkmeyer, 47 years., laborer; his wife Anna (46 years), Heinr. (19 years), Georg (10 years), August (7 years), Anna (6 years), Johannes (4 years), Wilhelm (3 years), Friedrich (10 months). [Note: some of the ages listed are not consistent with birthdate.]
The family settled near the village of Exeter, Nebraska USA. They initially lived on a farm southeast of Exeter and later purchased a 160 acre farm in the Fairmont Township in Fillmore County a few miles northwest of Exeter.

The family surname Barkmeyer transitioned to Barkmeier with the immigration of the Johann Friedrich (Frederick John) and Maria Catharina (Mary Catharine) Barkmeyer family.
